Herringbone LVT: the parquet look, without the upkeep

Herringbone is rectangular blocks laid at right angles in a zig-zag, so the end of each block meets the side of the next. (Chevron is different: its blocks are cut at an angle so the ends meet in a straight point.) In luxury vinyl it's warm, quiet, 100% waterproof and doesn't need sanding or oiling like real wood.

Both of our herringbone designs are dryback LVT: 2.5mm thick with a 0.55mm wear layer, glued down to the subfloor. We don't currently stock a click herringbone.

Fitting herringbone: what to know first

  • Preparation is everything. Dryback is thin, so anything under it can show through. Concrete and screed must be dry (75% RH or below), primed and smoothed. Floorboards need overlaying with at least 5.5–6mm flooring-grade plywood.
  • Setting out matters. A straight, square centre line is what makes herringbone look right, so it's a job where a fitter earns their money.
  • Adhesive and rolling. Use an LVT adhesive with the trowel notch the adhesive maker specifies, then roll in both directions with a heavy flooring roller.
  • Order extra. Allow about 15% for cutting and waste, rather than the usual 10%.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, which take priority. See the full fitting and subfloor preparation guide.

Questions

Good to know

Is herringbone LVT hard to fit?

It's a skilled job. The subfloor has to be smooth and level and the setting out has to be accurate, so we recommend a professional fitter for herringbone, especially in larger rooms. See the fitting guide.

How much extra herringbone flooring should I order?

Allow about 15% for cutting and waste, then round up to whole packs. Each design page has a calculator that works it out.

Does herringbone LVT need underlay?

No. Dryback herringbone is glued straight to the prepared subfloor, so it doesn't use underlay.

Can I put herringbone LVT in a kitchen or bathroom?

Yes. The blocks are 100% waterproof, so they suit kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. The subfloor must be dry and properly prepared before fitting, and you should follow the manufacturer's instructions for wet rooms.

Can I see it before I buy?

Yes. Viewings are by appointment near Leicester (LE2), or at our Kinoulton unit for some stock, so you can see full boards from the actual stock you'd be buying.

Do you do samples?

Yes. Samples are free to collect, and can be full planks. Or we'll post 3 cut samples (about 8–10 inches) for £5, and that £5 comes off your order.

How much is delivery?

Tracked pallet delivery anywhere on the UK mainland is £49.99, and free on flooring orders over £500. Premium van delivery within 150 miles of Leicester comes on your chosen date and time slot, into your room.
